Just weeks after fainting at a news conference , New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has been diagnosed with cancer, the team announced Friday.

Alderson is expected to undergo eight to 12 weeks of chemotherapy , and will thus miss the league’s 114th annual winter meetings  that are scheduled to take place later this month. Mets COO Jeff Wilpon explained that Alderson will remain general manager throughout the battle, and that his doctors “are optimistic about a full recovery,” as his strain of the disease is considered "very treatable."

"This is all that we will disclose about Sandy’s health issues and we will not be giving updates," Wilpon stated. "I hope you understand and will give Sandy and his family the privacy they have requested and deserve ... We wish him and his family the very best and look forward to this getting behind him."

Alderson will begin his first round of chemotherapy this week
