Zondag met Lubach

Usually, the Netherlands is not necessarily the country that dominates global headlines. However, this week, my country has made me proud twice by going viral with two amazing initiatives.

First, there was our Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Lilianne Ploumen who immediately acted after the Global Gag Rule was reinstated by the U.S., by creating a fund (SheDecides ) to make up for the lack of financial aid various organizations now face. Both official institutions as well as individuals are able to contribute towards a world in which especially women are able to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights, by providing sexual education, access to contraceptives, HIV/AIDS preventive measures, family planning and in some cases, safe abortion.

As great as that is, it was another Dutch initiative that catapulted us straight into worldwide fame: Arjen Lubachs introduction video of the Netherlands. If you havent seen it, you totally should - because it is great. And if you have already watched it, here it is again, because it will be great again (pun fully intended).

Its been watched by over 17 million people on YouTube alone - which is literally the entire population of the Netherlands. Theres been made an official React video to it as well, but in perhaps the strangest development of all time, Arjen Lubachs humor has done something unprecedented.

He has united, or perhaps ignited Europes sense of humor. The EU might be plagued by discontentment and disagreement - apparently we do share the same appreciation for quality humor. Satirical comedians all over Europe have decided to join in on the bid for the Second position, now that America is First. Theyve joined forces to collectively make fun of the crazy, controversial whirlwind that is Trumps electoral victory and it is amazing.

Countries like Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, and Denmark have responded with their own introductory videos, each explaining why their country should be Second instead of the Netherlands - even though we were definitely first in wanting to be second (if you can still follow).

And more comedians are still joining in, with their videos being collected on a website called itsgreat.eu . In fact, it looks like a new Eurovision: The Satire Edition has been created, what with countries dishing out twelve points to one another through the official Twitter account.

The EUs sense of humor - its great, just watch.
