SpongeBob Voice Actor Tom Kenny Approves the Rise of SpongeBob Memes

SpongeBob himself has given the thumbs up

TV shows and movies are breeding grounds for memes, SpongeBob especially. Whether it be its memorable comedy or bizarre creative choices, SpongeBob is firmly planted in pop culture. 

“It’s cool to be a part of something that has this big, pop cultural-footprint,” SpongeBob voice actor Tom Kenny said in a Q & A session last Saturday at ConnectiCon. “Where people take this thing that’s there and kind of do their own grandma moses phone card version of it. It’s pretty cool. I love it.” 

Kenny mentioned that there are G-rated memes and those that are not, but they always make him laugh. 

“I love the memes, “ Kenny proclaimed. “I’m always amazed by people’s ingenuity and twistedness.” 

In fact, he admits he uses them himself. 

“They come in handy,” he said. “Somebody’s using the bathroom for too long you go ‘two hours later.’”

It’s fitting, seeing as Kenny is the original source of many of these memes, a result of his varied voice acting career. His greatest roles have been SpongeBob, The Ice King (”Adventure Time”), the Mayor of Townsville (”The Powerpuff Girls”), and Spyro the Dragon. 

Kenny said that he usually discovers memes through his children, who are 18 and 13 years old. They were probably the first to recognize the difference between SpongeGar and the Primitive Sponge. 

Either way, Kenny, who typically does 8 or 9 shows at a time, is bound to spawn more memes for the public’s entertainment.
