An Indianapolis teen was turned over to cops by his own grandparents after they recognized him in surveillance footage released by police.

Charles Floyd and his wife gave their 18-year-old grandson Jonathan Ratcliff the tough love after reportedly seeing him on video ransacking a gas station.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department released the clip Thursday to appeal for information on the group of males behind raids on several Phillips 66 locations.

The footage shows the raiders brazenly stuffing merchandise into bags before fleeing:

The IMPD initially stated on Friday that Ratcliff was turned in by his mother. But WISH reported Saturday it was actually his grandparents who did the deed, and that they even drove him to the IMPD's Southwest District headquarters themselves.

Floyd said he'd previously warned his grandson over his conduct. "It's just hurtful," he told WISH. "Because we had talked to him about, you know, getting his life right."

The IMPD said Ratcliff's grandparents had "done the right thing" in surrendering him to the authorities.

But, according to CBS4, they already had "a solid lead " on his involvement -- he'd allegedly thrown his backpack, containing homework assignments with his name written at the top, at a clerk during one of the raids.

Ratcliff was arrested and now faces a preliminary charge of theft , Fox 29 reported.

"He gave some statements that implicated him in three of the four that we were looking at," IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams told CBS4. The other suspects are still at large.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers of Indiana at (317) 262-TIPS.
