The 10 Very Best Cities For A Working Retirement

These U.S. cities offer both work and play for your golden years.

Older Americans increasingly are choosing to postpone total retirement , whether it's to continue saving up money or because they aren't quite ready to leave the workforce .

Whatever the reason, choosing a place to "worktire" means looking at more than just recreational activities and the weather forecast.

Personal finance website SmartAsset has just released its second annual list of the Best Cities For A Worktirement

After looking at over 400 cities throughout the nation, they've narrowed it down to the top 25 after looking at a variety of factors including tax rates, availability of health care, housing costs and the local senior population.

Florida was a big winner with four cities in the top 10 -- good news for anyone who hates the cold.

"Florida cities like Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach offer low average effective tax rates for retirees. This may help seniors in the workforce keep a larger portion of their paychecks and also spend less on sales taxes," SmartAsset's Vice President of Content AJ Smith told The Huffington Post in an email. "Additionally, the Sunshine State provides a high concentration of seniors and senior-related amenities, like recreational facilities and doctors' offices. These metrics helped those cities perform well in this year's study."

Check out the top 10 cities below and head over to SmartAsset to see the complete list and methodology.

This coastal Florida town is just the first of several South Florida cities on SmartAsset's list. Climate aside, Fort Lauderdale takes the top spot thanks to its high number of doctors relative to the population and a booming senior population. Sometimes called the "Yachting Capital Of The World," it's also a great spot for boating enthusiasts.
Pompano Beach, Florida

Just north of Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach nabbed the second spot with an abundance of health care professionals and a large senior population.

Sin City is always a hit. For prospective retirees in particular, it offers "solid all-round performance" in SmartAsset's survey metrics, plus it has the highest senior population of any of the cities in the top 10. Viva Las Vegas!

Ample health care, lots of recreational activities and entertainment choices -- as well as a large job market -- makes Miami a solid pick for worktirement.

If you want to worktire in the south, look no further. SmartAsset says Birmingham is one of the more affordable places to live and has one of the lowest rates of senior unemployment compared with the other cities on the list.

This midwestern city just northwest of Detroit offers a small-town feel and is close to the attractions of a major city. It makes the top 10 thanks to a high number of doctors' offices, relative to the number of residents, and a substantial senior population.

Nestled between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, like the other Florida cities on the list, has lots of recreational activities for retirees, thanks to a large senior population.
Tucson, Arizona

If you want the heat without the humidity, Tucson might be an excellent choice. It has the second-lowest housing costs of any city in the top 10 and is known to be very dog-friendly.
Santa Monica, California

No retirement list would be complete without an appearance from California. Located close to Los Angeles, housing costs in Santa Monica are pricey, but well worth it if you're looking for plenty of recreational facilities and abundant health care.
