A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after he fell into the jaguar exhibit at the Little Rock, Arkansas Zoo on Friday morning.

Zoo staff members used fire extinguishers to keep the animals away from the child as other workers lowered a ladder into the cage and rescued the boy, according to KATV.

KARK reports that the child is heading into emergency surgery to repair a skull fracture.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and the family," City Manager Bruce Moore said in a statement. "A full investigation into the incident is being conducted.
