'Transparent' Co-Producer On Why The Show Prioritizes Hiring Transgender People

"The future of transgender representation is really to build inroads for trans people in the media to become authors of their own stories."

Amazon's hit series "Transparent" has been lauded for its honest and sensitive portrayal of a transgender story and dedication to enhancing trans visibility. But the show doesn't want to be a blip on society's radar -- it wants to actually make strides for the community by hiring trans people to tell their own stories, according to the show's co-producer Rhys Ernst.

Ernst explained to HuffPost Live's Zerlina Maxwell  on Wednesday that in order to continue enhancing trans visibility, trans people must make "meaningful" advancements within the industry. Hence why the show prioritizes hiring trans people .

"We really put a priority on hiring trans crew people and trying to advance them up the rank," Ernst said. "So I think the future of transgender representation is really to build inroads for trans people in the media to become authors of their own stories, to become writers and producers and directors themselves."
