Nobel Prize in Physics
The Nobel Committee awarded half the prize for physics to Roger Penrose and the other half jointly to Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez.
Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state, then nearly 14 billion years ago expansion started, academy member Ulf Danielsson said, quoting The Big Bang theme at the presentation in Stockholm.
The men were honored for discoveries that have offered a new understanding of the universes structure and history.
This year's chemistry prize was all about "harnessing the power of evolution."
WHAT'S HAPPENING
Strickland is only the third woman to have won the physics prize.
Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne will share the prize.
Only two women have ever won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 115 years.
