Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the effort to oust Mayorkas "the least legitimate, least substantive and most politicized impeachment trial" ever.
The trial could be over very quickly due to bipartisan Senate opposition to ousting President Joe Biden's secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
The raids come after numerous allegations of violence and sexual abuse.
Republicans know it's a political stunt. But if they can help Trump look tough on border security ahead of the presidential election, who cares!
WHAT'S HAPPENING
In a stunning defeat for GOP leaders, a handful of Republicans joined Democrats in condemning the effort as bad politics, bad policy and unconstitutional.
The impeachment vote was part of a broader attack on President Joe Bidens immigration policies ahead of the November election.
Mayorkas is the first immigrant and the first Latino person to serve as secretary of homeland security.
"Just shoveling the same old s**t and calling it sugar, a House Democrat said of the GOP's effort to oust Alejandro Mayorkas.
The state's attorney general blamed the Biden administration for the recent drownings and called legal threats a waste of time and resources.
"Perhaps he does not know that I am the child of a Holocaust survivor," Alejandro Mayorkas said.
