New Campaign Urges Latinos To Express Cultural Pride By Voting

We are powerful. We are strong. And we will be the ones deciding the future of this country."

This Hispanic Heritage Month, Voto Latino is encouraging Latinos to express their cultural pride through civic action.

The nonpartisan organization launched their Hispanic Heritage Month of Action campaign Thursday with a new bilingual video in which 9 Latino community leaders discuss what they feel is at stake this election and share why they’re showing up to the polls come November.

“There are 27 million eligible Latino voters in 2016,” notes Janet Murguía, president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza  (NCLR).

“We are powerful. We are strong. And we will be the ones deciding the future of this country,” reminds Rocio Saenz, Executive Vice President of Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

But the only way that can happen, notes Voto Latino’s President and CEO, María Teresa Kumar, is if Latinos actively participate in local and federal elections.

The initiative aims to increase registration among eligible Latino voters during Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15), as it happens to coincide with many state’s voter registration deadlines and National Voter Registration Day (Sept. 27).
